Back-to-school update on school board finances

In this report, People for Education examines the impact of 2006/07 provincial education funding decisions – in particular the impact on Ontario’s northern school boards.  

The update shows that most boards used reserve funds to balance their budgets, and that eleven school boards received cuts in their operating funding – every one of them in Northern Ontario. Northern boards were also disproportionately affected by cuts to the Learning Opportunities Grants.

The report includes board-by-board information on the impact of underfunding for fuel, utilities, school maintenance and busing; the gap between actual salaries and the amounts provided by the province; issues in funding special Education and busing. It also includes statements and letters from school board directors.
