Categories of special education exceptionality
The Ministry of Education has developed a list of categories of special education exceptionalities to assist in identifying what kind of support the student needs. In this section you can find information about the five categories of exceptionalities (behaviour, communication, intellectual, physical, and multiple) and tips for navigating the system.
According to a memo from the Ministry of Education, "all students with demonstrable learning based needs" including conditions such as ADD/ADHD, Tourette Syndrome and Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, are entitled to appropriate special education programs and services.
A new Ontario report for the Ministries of Health and Long-Term Care, Education and Children and Youth Services says kids are waiting too long for school health services; that access to service may be inequitable; and that there are problems with coordination.
