The Privacy Commissioner of Canada has launched a series of new tools to help teachers and parents communicate with young people about the privacy risks associated with online activities, and help students better protect their information online. The new tip sheet offers 12 practical tips for parents who want to talk to their kids about privacy in the online world. The tips include some simple ideas and advice that parents can use to help limit the risks to their children’s personal information, while still allowing them to benefit from and enjoy their time online. The video speaks to teens directly and covers the key privacy concepts kids need to consider when sharing information online. The video can be viewed online or downloaded for discussing privacy issues with kids. The youth presentation package can be used by schools, and includes speaking notes and a power point presentation.
People For Education Viewpoint:
It’s great to see the Office of the Privacy Commissioner staying current on these emerging issues – and being pro-active by offering advice to parents and youth. People for Education was very fortunate to have a guest speaker from the Office of the Privacy Commissioner, Kristen Yates, Senior Education Officer deliver online training about using Facebook.
