With support from people like you, People for Education has been able to provide Leticia Gutierrez, a newcomer from Mexico, with the support she needed to ensure a smooth transition to the Canadian education system for her children. Through our parent help line, our multi-lingual tip sheets, and access to education information on our website, Leticia, and many other parents like her, can access the resources, training, and support they need to be effectively involved in the public education system.
“When I met the people at People for Education, I really felt like I was part of Canada.” – Leticia Gutierrez
Today, five years after landing in Toronto from Mexico, Leticia, her husband and two daughters have adjusted to their new life in Canada. The entire family has learned how to speak English; both parents are working; the younger daughter, Rebeca, is starting high school in the fall and the oldest, Alejandra, is graduating from high school in June and has been accepted into the Ontario College of Art & Design, where she will study advertising.
As a parent new to the country, Leticia had to navigate the education system while learning a new language and learning her way in a new culture and society.
“Parents don’t always have time. They’re working and paying the bills. Their minds are busy. They need to be able to easily understand something to help them. The tip sheets in my language are very helpful. I like to read the information on the People for Education website. I can do that any time—day or night.” – Leticia Gutierrez
Show your support for the work we are doing for Leticia, and for the 95% of Ontario’s students who attend publicly funded schools. By donating to People for Education, you can help ensure that every child has access to a strong and equitable education system.
We’re making a difference
“Here’s a quick note to thank People for Education for helping to spread the word about the Canada Learning Bond and www.smartsaver.org through your January newsletter and online community. We had close to a hundred visits to the website directly from these sources…. Having social networks like yours help spread the word not only reaches eligible families we could never reach on our own, but ensures families learn about it from people they trust. You wrote about it in your newsletter and suddenly, low-income parents in the Southeast Kootenay district of BC learned from their own Parent Advisory Council that there is free money they can access to start saving for their kids’ higher education. Awesome!”

Keep up the good work, we need P4E. Thanks from a total fan.”
